A 5el 28Ohm 50MHz Optimised Wideband Low impedance (OWL) Yagi

Revised 8th February 2010

Premium commercial versions of this antenna at Innovantennas

The OWL by G0KSC provides the benefits of both OWA (Optimised wideband Array) 50 Ohm antennas with those of traditional low impedance antennas. More information on the OWL can be found here

Visit HEREto learn how to make the OWL Match/Balun

Do not look at the gain figure of this antenna and compare with other 6 element 50MHz Yagis. Compare the gain, F/B and bandwidth together against other antennas of a similar boom length. With 10.52dBi and a boom less than 4.1M long, this antenna will be a winner for field days and the rural Ham radio operator.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Special attention should be taken in ensuring the element spacing and sizes are absolutley correct upon a 28 Ohm Yagi
  • If SWR is not perfect, D1 may also need to be adjusted. An analyser is reccomended for use when finalising 28 Ohm OWL Yagis
  • Visit 'Making the OWL Match' for more information on the recommended matching methods
  • Please add 2mm to each element to allow for insulator correction if using G0KSC insulators. Other insulators may require different correction, Email me for details

Fantastic Azimuth plot of this 5el 50MHz OWL Yagi

The Elevation plot is really clean too. A quiet antenna compared with most!

This SWR plot is taken with the Coaxial stub embedded within the EZNEC model Ever seen a 28 Ohm antenna like this one before? Watch how many now appear on the Internet but remember where you saw them first!

The G0KSC OWL element layout. Note the close spacing of the first 3 elements which give the OWL its extra gain and wide bandwidth.

The First confirmed OWL Yagi in ZL was confirmed by ZL1RS today. The 8 element 9.8 metre long 50MHz version with 13.27dBi gain was built and tested by Bob this weekend. The antenna (pictured below) required some small insulaotr correction due to the thru-element-and-boom insulators (see An 'intro to the OWL Yagi' and 'PLEASE READ!!' sections of this site for more information on insulator correction) but presents a wide, flat SWR curve uncharacteristic of a Yagi of only 12.5Ohm impedance.

The 8el 50MHz OWL at ZL1RS

More OWL Yagis in both 28Ohm and 12.5Ohm versions are being added daily. Low impedance antennas modeled how they should be!

Additionally, this weekend saw the installation of 2 10el Plus2 2M LFA yagis at ZS6JON. John installed his 2 new Yagis and said 'Initial tests are good' with both antennas showing a completley flat 1.1:1 SWR across the whole 2M band.

Rob VK2GOM finished his 3el 6M LFA yagi this weekend too and reported 'Perfect SWR' from his high gain compact Yagi. All of the above antennas are listed upon this site for free and can be built by anyone. Why not give it a shot yourself this year, there is nothing more satifying than building an antenna from scratch!

And Finally, G0KSC completed his own 10el Plus2 LFA Yagi and got it in the air. Good results have been seen with excellent (as predicted) F/B ratio and excellent super flat SWR from 144 to 146MHz.

Why not pick out your easy-to-build G0KSC Yagi for your next spring time project!
